INLYTA and pembrolizumab are 2 different types of medicines that work in 2 different ways.
In order for cancer cells to spread, they need a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients. They get these from blood vessels.
When a tumor reaches a certain size, it needs new blood vessels to keep growing. |
Animal and laboratory studies suggest that INLYTA prevents new blood vessels from forming.
It is believed that this may help stop tumors from growing and cancer from spreading. |
How your immune system fights cancerYour body defends against diseases using the immune system. One of the ways the immune system detects and fights diseases, including cancer, is by using certain types of cells called T cells. T cells can find and attack unwanted cells in the body. Certain cancer cells are able to hide from T cells by using something called the PD-1 pathway. This allows those cancer cells to multiply and spread. How pembrolizumab can helpThis is where pembrolizumab is believed to be able to help. It doesn’t attack cancer cells directly. It‘s an immunotherapy that blocks the PD-1 pathway so that cancer cells can’t use it to hide from T cells. This allows T cells to find and attack those cancer cells. Pembrolizumab can cause your immune system to attack normal organs and tissues in any area of your body and can affect the way they work. These problems can sometimes become severe or life-threatening and can lead to death. Talk to your healthcare provider about all the important safety information for pembrolizumab. |
INLYTA with pembrolizumab was studied in a clinical trial vs sunitinib. |
